As someone who spent 4 years in the South, I have to find ways to survive these bitterly cold days in St. Louis. Eating soup dumplings seems to work just fine. Soup dumplings, or Xiao Long Bao in Chinese, is a small steamed bun. A soup dumpling is made from three main parts: a supple (delicately think dumpling skin), meat (usually beef or pork), and a seasoned broth. The soup dumplings are served hot in the bamboo baskets in which they were steamed, usually on a bed of dried leaves of paper mat. When the dumplings are steamed, they becomes a little packet of hot soup and meat. These little packets are the secret weapon against the Midwestern winter.
I've heard good things about Soup Dumplings STL from my Asian friends. To be honest, I was surprised to discover a soup dumpling place in St. Louis. Since I was a bit suspicious about this place, I decided to check it out with M.
Soup Dumplings STL is located across from Olive Supermarket. This shopping center also houses some popular spots, such as Cate Zone Chinese Cafe and Cube Tea Studio. When M and I arrived around 7PM, we were surprised to find that the place was still packed an hour before closing - all the tables were taken. However, don't worry too much if you don't have a table right away. The customers move quickly. We only waited about 10 mins for a table.

You can find the menu above the counter. The menu was sampler than most Chinese restaurants (iykyk) - only soup dumplings of different flavors, appetizers, and a few main courses. We put in three orders of soup dumplings: beef, chicken, and crab&pork. Our soup dumplings came quick and with a great presentation - serving hot on a paper mat in a bamboo basket. We tried all three flavors - all were delicious. However, we both picked the beef as our favorite. The broth was well seasoned and confined perfectly in the dumplings. If you poke a small hole on the supple, you can literally drink the broth from that hole.
If you have never had soup dumplings before, you should visit Soup Dumplings STL. You can even find an instruction on how to consume these dumplings on the wall. This instruction will land you to a new territory in the culinary world.
