I have a major life update to announce: I moved to New Orleans and started medical school this July. I’ve been chasing this dream for the past 7 years (maybe 8 if you count senior year of high school). It's like dreaming of winning the lottery for 8 years, and then suddenly, you win. You don’t quite know what to do anymore. That’s exactly how I feel right now. Fortunately—or unfortunately—medical school doesn’t give me much time to process it all. I’m quickly buried in all the material I need to understand in a short amount of time.

Even though I’m busy with school, I still have some time after each block exam to explore the city. New Orleans is far from perfect (the terrible road conditions and fragile infrastructure come to mind), but it’s still a charming city, known for its diverse and flavorful cuisine. After my first block exams, I went out with two new friends for brunch at Toast. As my first dining experience in NOLA, Toast did not disappoint!

What we had at the table

Toast is a cozy neighborhood brunch spot. My two friends and I arrived around noon on a Sunday, and the place was already packed. We had to wait about 20 minutes for a table. Once seated, we were greeted by our waitress with copies of their menu. After scanning it, I had a hard time deciding—almost every classic breakfast item was there: omelets, toast, crepes, and more. Everything looked amazing!

Omelette with Ratarouille, Goat Cheese, and Spinach and sides of toast and fresh fruits

I had a hard time deciding, but I eventually went with the omelette with ratatouille, goat cheese, and spinach. Along with the omelette, I got to choose two sides, and I picked toast and fresh fruit. The omelette was well-seasoned, and the fruit was fresh and sweet. My two friends also loved their food. We had a great time catching up in this cozy, bustling spot.

Navigating a major life change is incredibly challenging, even when it's something I've longed for. The excitement of starting a new chapter of my life as a medical student comes with an undercurrent of uncertainty. Sometimes, I hardly believe that I can no longer stick with my old routines in St. Louis. For sure, I miss my favorite food spots and bars. However, I'm ready to embrace this new journey.
